Fall/Winter preview - OCTOBER

These movies are on my radar for the month of October.  I probably won't see ALL of these movies, but these are ones that have attracted my attention.  I have attached the trailers for each of the movies so if you want check them out and tell me in the comments what you think of the trailers.

OCTOBER
  • Gravity
-Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are in space on the space shuttle Explorer.  It's her first mission, it's his last mission.  Space debris hits the Explorer which leaves them stranded in space with a limited amount of air and no means of communication with Earth. This is the latest from Alfonso Cuaron, the director of 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' and 'Children of Men'. It looks like has potential, but for some reason I've been 'iffy' on it ever since I first watched the trailer.  It's received great reviews, but i don't know.  This will be offered in traditional 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D.  If I do go see it maybe I'll go see it in IMAX 3D.  I mean, a space movie on a giant screen in 3D?  Sold.  Then again 'Star Trek Into Darkness' was on IMAX 3D but I saw it in 2D...
  • Captain Phillips
-Remember the story of the Somali pirates taking over an American cargo ship a few years ago?  Well, it gets the Hollywood treatment with Tom Hanks as the titular captain.  Directed by Paul Greengrass, who also made both 'Bourne Supremacy' and 'Bourne Ultimatum', as well as the 9/11 movie 'United 93'.  This movie does look pretty intense.
  • Machete Kills
-The long awaited sequel to 2010's 'Machete'.  This time around Machete (Danny Trejo) is hired by the President (Charlie Sheen) to stop a madman (Mel Gibson) from launching a missile at the White House.  This one won't be winning any Oscars, but it sounds like it could be a lot of gratuitous, bloody fun like the first 'Machete'.
  • Escape Plan
-Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger attempt to break out of a ridiculously high security prison.  Once again, probably not exactly an Oscar contender, but it could be fun.
  • 12 Years A Slave
-Okay, this one actually DOES look like an Oscar contender.  Based on the memoir by Solomon Northrop, it chronicles how he was born a free man and as an adult was kidnapped into slavery and sold into the deep south.  With Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.  I read an excerpt of this memoir in my Civil War class this semester.  Good stuff. And the movie looks great.
  • Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa
-Johnny Knoxville's Bad Grandpa character gets his own movie.  In addition to the usual 'Jackass' stunts and pranks, the 'Bad Grandpa' character also has to escort his grandson (Jackson Nicoll) to his father's house after his mother is jailed.  The other 'Jackass' movies are shocking, borderline offensive, dumb, but extremely funny and the trailer for this makes it look like 'Bad Grandpa' follows suit with the others.  A little warning about the 'Bad Grandpa' trailer:  The end of the trailer features Johnny Knoxville and Jackson Nicoll infiltrating a child pageant and their routine....well....becomes extremely inappropriate to say the least........

OTHER MOVIES COMING OUT IN OCTOBER
  • 'Runner, Runner' the online poker thriller with Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck
  • The 'Carrie' remake with Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore
  • 'The Fifth Estate', the Wikileaks movie with Benedict Cumberbatch
  • 'The Counselor', about a lawyer who starts delving into drug trafficking.  With Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz.

I will be doing this also with movies coming out in November and December, so stay tuned.  And once again, I will be attaching the trailers for the movies in those months as well.
